Traditional Chinese Medicinal Acupuncture - Beginning May 7, 2010
Acupuncture is a component of traditional Chinese medicine that is over 3,000 years old. Acupuncture is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. Energy circulates throughout the body along specific pathways that are called meridians or channels. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur. Acupuncture works to "re-program" and restore normal functions by stimulating certain points on the meridians in order to free up the Qi or energy.
Cupping is another type of treatment. This is a method of stimulating acupuncture points by applying suction through a metal, wood or glass jar, in which a partial vacuum has been created. This technique produces blood congestion at the site, and therefore stimulates the area. Cupping is used for low back pain, sprains, soft tissue injuries, and helping relieve fluid from the lungs in chronic bronchitis.
Our Acupuncturist, Heather Geoghegan, is offering both of these techniques. Ms. Geoghegan received her Master's of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture degree from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in Portland, OR and is a member of the American Acupuncture Council. In addition, she is certified by the NCCAOM as a Diplomat of Acupuncture and licensed in North Carolina. Her training includes adjunctive therapies such as Chinese manipulative therapy, acupressure, auricolotherapy, moxibustion & dietary and lifestyle changes.
