Theodosia returns for its second season, led by Vivian Howard and inspired by the stories, flavors, and spirit of the North Carolina coast. Named for Theodosia Burr Alston, whose life and disappearance remain part of Outer Banks legend, the experience carries a sense of place that feels both grounded and quietly mysterious.

From her beloved early restaurants like Chef & The Farmer and the Boiler Room in Kinston, North Carolina, to her New York Times best-selling cookbooks like Deep Run Roots: Stories and Recipes from My Corner of the South and PBS television series A Chef’s Life, Chef Howard has helped shape the landscape of regional Southern cooking. Inspired by the rich culture of the Outer Banks, Theodosia is the next stage in Howard’s culinary evolution.

The Watery Part of the World Brunch
Acclaimed chef and author Vivian Howard welcomes guests to Theodosia for a special literary brunch inspired by Michael Parker’s novel, The Watery Part of the World, which explores the enduring mystery of Theodosia Burr’s disappearance.
Due to overwhelming demand, we’ve added a second seating on Sunday, September 27.
Join Vivian and Michael Parker at The Sanderling for an intimate conversation about the novel, its inspiration, and the coastal history that helped shape Theodosia. Guests will enjoy an exclusive brunch menu by Vivian Howard celebrating the flavors of North Carolina’s coast, followed by a book signing with Michael Parker.
Tickets include brunch, discussion, book signing, and a copy of The Watery Part of the World shipped in advance.
Please note: Guests wishing to sit together must be booked on the same reservation (up to 4 guests). Addresses are required at checkout for book delivery.

Women of the Outer Banks
In January 1813, the Patriot vanished off the Outer Banks, carrying Theodosia Burr Alston. She was thirty. Her story was never resolved.
Some say it ends in a cottage near Nags Head, where a portrait of a young woman appeared years later under circumstances no one could explain. The Banks has always held onto its legends.
This restaurant carries her name, but it stands for more than one story. This coast was built and sustained largely by women, most of whom history overlooked.
The photographs here offer a small correction, drawn from archives and private collections. They capture women whose lives shaped this place.
Some were recognized. Most were not.
All of them are part of where you are now.
