America’s 250th
In 2026, the United States commemorates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a milestone that invites reflection and renewed appreciation for the places woven into the nation’s story.
Few destinations are more closely tied to those early chapters than the Outer Banks. Nearby Roanoke Island is home to the mystery of the Lost Colony at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, where England’s first settlement attempt in the New World began in 1587. Along the coast, landmarks like the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the preserved shoreline of Cape Hatteras National Seashore reflect centuries of maritime history. Just south, the Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the birthplace of powered flight, another defining American achievement.
Celebrate the occasion with a summer escape that gives you time to explore both the history and the natural beauty of the region. When you stay three nights or more, you’ll receive a $250 resort credit to enhance your experience.
Apply your credit toward:
- Coastal dining experiences
- Restorative spa treatments
- On-property amenities and seasonal programming
Spend your days visiting nearby historic sites, climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, exploring Roanoke Island, or simply enjoying long afternoons by the water. Return to the Sanderling for relaxed evenings and unhurried time together.
A milestone worth honoring deserves a destination equally meaningful.

Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday at America’s First Settlement.
First English Settlement
The Outer Banks was home to The Roanoke Colony, established in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh on North Carolina’s Roanoke Island. This was England’s first attempt at a permanent North American settlement. Virginia Dare was the first English child born in America- right here on the shores of the Outer Banks. Each summer, a local theater reenacts this time period. The Lost Colony tells the true story of the first attempt at English colonization in America and the Colony’s encounters with the Algonquin Native Americans who lived there.

The first flight, piloted by Orville, lasted 12 seconds covering 120 feet. They made four flights that day, with the longest lasting 59 seconds.
