Things to Know About the Outer Banks
The Outer Banks offers a wide range of activities shaped by its coastal setting. Time can be spent kayaking along the sound, surfing the Atlantic, or setting out on a boat for a day on the water. Fishing, sailing, and guided wildlife tours are all part of the experience, along with time spent exploring nearby towns and quiet stretches of shoreline.
At The Sanderling, many of these moments begin just steps from your stay.
The Outer Banks are known for their wide beaches, rolling dunes, and a strong connection to nature. Along the coast, historic lighthouses rise above the shoreline, while the Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the birthplace of flight.
Further north, wild horses still move freely through the dunes, offering a rare glimpse of the landscape as it once was.
Days here tend to follow a natural rhythm. Mornings on the beach, afternoons on the water, and evenings that gather slowly as the light fades.
Beyond that, visitors explore more than 100 miles of coastline, spend time at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, or set out to see the wild horses in Corolla. Water sports, fishing, and coastal drives fill the hours in between.
Some come for adventure, others for rest. Most find a balance somewhere in between.
Some of the most memorable moments here are also the simplest. Spend time on the wide, open beaches, walk the shifting dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park, or explore the quiet landscapes of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
Visiting historic lighthouses or watching the sunset over the sound offers a sense of place that feels both grounding and enduring.
