Check-in is 4 pm and check-out is 11 am for Resort Rooms.

By Car
Most guests arrive by car, and the drive through the scenic Outer Banks is part of what makes this destination so special.
From the North (Norfolk, VA / Washington, D.C.):
Take I-64 E toward Chesapeake.
- Continue on US-168 S (Chesapeake Expressway – toll road).
- Merge onto NC-168 S and continue onto US-158 E toward Kitty Hawk.
- In Kitty Hawk, turn left onto NC-12 N (Duck Road).
- Follow NC-12 N for approximately 7 miles to reach the resort on your right.
From the South (Wilmington, NC / Raleigh, NC):
Take US-64 E to Roanoke Island.
- Cross the Virginia Dare Bridge to Nags Head.
- Turn left onto US-158 W, then right onto NC-12 N.
- Continue on NC-12 N through Kitty Hawk to Duck. Sanderling Resort will be on your right.
Parking: Complimentary self-parking is available for all resort guests.
By Air
The nearest major airport is Norfolk International Airport (ORF), approximately 90 miles (about 2 hours) from the resort. Rental cars and shuttle services are available at the airport.
Other nearby regional airports include:
- Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) – 4.5 hours
- Dare County Regional Airport (MQI) – 45 minutes (private and charter flights only)

Tips for a Smooth Arrival
Plan Ahead: Traffic can be heavy during summer weekends. Try to arrive earlier in the day or on a weekday if possible.
Bridge Traffic: The Wright Memorial Bridge can back up on Saturdays. Consider alternate travel days for a smoother journey.
Refuel & Refresh: Once on NC-12, gas stations and services are limited—plan accordingly.
Yes; a $100 per night hold will be placed on a valid credit card at the time of check-in
Resort Rooms: we charge a $50 taxable resort fee that covers private beach access, beach chairs, umbrellas and towels, self parking, electric charging stations, high-speed wireless internet, in-room coffee and tea, lawn games and more.
Residences: the resort fee is 5% taxable nightly fee (minimum $50 per night), additionally residences will be charged a cleaning fee of $250 for 2-4 bedrooms, $350 for 6 bedrooms.
Our Standard Deposit Policy is equal to 1 night room and tax, at the time of your booking for resort rooms and 50% of full stay for our residences.
The remaining balance will be due 14 days prior to arrival. If a reservation is booked within 7 days of arrival, 100% is charged at the time of booking.
High Season (May 1st- September 30th):
Resort Rooms: Cancellations must be made 14 days before your reservation start date.
Residences: Cancellations must be made 60 days before your reservation start date. Subject Subject to penalty of full stay plus taxes/fees.
Low Season (October 1st-April 30th):
Resort Rooms: Cancellations must be made 72 hours before your reservation start date. Subject to penalty of 1 night room rate plus taxes/fees.
Residences: Cancellations must be made 30 days before your reservation start date. Subject to penalty equal to 50% of deposit.

Yes. Guests staying in Vacation Rental Homes get access to all the resort’s activities and amenities.
Yes. You need to be 21.
As part of our commitment to provide the highest level of service to our guests, The Sanderling welcomes dogs staying with their owners in designated pet-friendly guestrooms and vacation homes. The fee is $300 and the maximum allowance is two (2) dogs, under 60 pounds each, per guestroom or vacation home. This fee will be added to your reservation upon check-in and is non-refundable.
The Sanderling is a smoke-free property. A $250 recovery fee will be charged for smoking in your room or vacation home.
Yes. We have three electric car chargers on-site at The Sanderling, including options for both Tesla and other electric vehicles, conveniently located in our parking lot.
Our Destination Fee (1%) is collected to help support The Sanderling’s programming, activities, events, and sustainability efforts. This destination and community impact fee applies to all reservations.
